Our recidivism reduction program serves 15 youth between the ages of 12 and 18 who are involved in the juvenile justice system. The program builds on our blended mentoring model and includes counseling, parental involvement and academic support. Youth will participate in a two-hour mentoring session each week in addition to a two-hour group meeting. The goal is for each youth to be supported in every way possible so that he or she does not become incarcerated again.
Chicago LAMP partner schools refer youth to the program. At the beginning of enrollment, our staff conducts an assessment to determine what intervention methods may be the best fit. A reassessment of needs takes place every six months.
Mentors of youth in our recidivism reduction program have a unique opportunity to make a difference. In addition to the regular mentor responsibilities, these mentors also help make sure that mentees attend all probation or parole appointments, and work with the case manager to identify employment opportunities.
Goals:
- Reduce likelihood of re-incarceration
- Ensure school attendance
- Improve family relationships
- Provide substance abuse support
- Discover job prospects
